Funding & Grants
There are funding programs for commercial electric light vehicles at the federal, state, and municipal levels. These change constantly, and whether one is right for you depends on your location, legal structure, and the number of units.
What matters when applying
These points apply across all programs and are often the deciding factor in whether funding is an option at all.
Timing of the application
Almost all programs require that the project has not yet begun. As a rule, placing a binding order is considered the start of the project. If you buy first and apply later, you lose your eligibility.
Basis of assessment
What the grant covers varies significantly depending on the program. Federal programs are based on the additional investment costs compared to a comparable combustion-engine vehicle, while regional programs often use a percentage of the purchase price with a fixed maximum amount per vehicle.
Minimum funding thresholds
Some programs only pay out once a certain funding threshold is met—at the federal level, this is in the five-figure range. Since funding is based only on the additional costs rather than the purchase price, this threshold is rarely reached with a single vehicle. However, the math changes when purchasing multiple vehicles.
Purchase or leasing
Some programs exclusively fund purchases and exclude leasing installments, while others treat both options equally. This should be clarified before you decide on a financing model.
Requirements and documentation
Common requirements include minimum holding periods, proof of green electricity for charging operations, and caps on state aid within three fiscal years (de minimis). There is generally no legal entitlement to funding.
